“The lady-in-waiting” is another painting from the Queen series. Here she has distracted her pursuers and lured them away from her beloved Queen. She was injured, but was able to escape. Her black garment speaks of grief and iminent, mortal danger, but at the same time it exudes bravery and strength. The rubies of her diadem, symbols of life and love, correspond to the red of the wounds: signs of love and sacrifice.
